Shouldn’t Your Supplements be Organic Too?
When given the choice between a nutritional supplement that’s created from organically grown ingredients (versus one whose ingredients may have been genetically engineered, grown with pesticides, and processed with ionizing radiation) most people would make the very obvious natural choice – ORGANIC – because organic products protect the earth (and our bodies) from harmful chemicals and potentially dangerous technologies.
Organic Defined
By law, a product that’s labeled organic must be produced without:
- Most conventional pesticides
- Fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge
- Genetically engineered ingredients
- Ionizing radiation
The 2 Levels of Organic
According to the National Organic Program (NOP), the framework that regulates organic food, the 2 primary levels governing the use of the word “organic” for nutritional supplements includes:
- Highest Level: “Organic” – must contain at least 95% organic ingredients, and can use the official green and white USDA Certified Organic Seal.
- Lower Level: “Made with Organic Ingredients” – must contain at least 70% organic ingredients, but cannot use the official green and white USDA Certified Organic Seal.

USDA Certified Organic Seal
Just make sure to read labels very carefully, because not all products using the word “organic” are alike. Some brands claim to be “organic”, but reading the label, you’ll find they’re only “made with organic ingredients” (meaning they could contain up to 30% non-organic ingredients) – so be sure to look for the USDA seal to help ensure you’re getting the highest level of organic supplements available.
Why Organic?
The fact is, most dietary supplements contain synthetic vitamins. Why? Because quite frankly, it’s much less expensive to chemically manufacture vitamins than to extract them from whole foods – meaning your supposedly “natural” supplement may not contain ANY natural ingredients whatsoever, and is only “natural” in the sense it doesn’t contain any artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.
Why is Whole Food Better?
While simple in philosophy, the impetus behind “whole food sourced nutrition” is that nature knows best. Where most vitamin supplements attempt to mimic nature by adding high doses of isolated vitamin and nutrient chemical imitations, they simply can’t deliver the full nutritional benefit of the whole food itself.*
The idea that we can analyze an orange, find the “active” constituent, chemically synthesize it in a lab, concentrate it, and then receive the same health benefits as the original orange produced by nature is misguided at best – as the whole food doesn’t contain just one active constituent, but a complex matrix of interactive constituents that work in synergy to deliver optimum nutritional benefit.*
In whole foods, for example, Vitamin C always occurs with bioflavonoids (a biologically active plant molecule that dramatically increase absorption), where chemically synthesized Vitamin C supplements are forced to add back bioflavonoids.
Why imitate nature when you can have the real thing – in the exact proportions nature intended? With organic dietary supplements, you can!*
