What is Stress?
In short, stress is your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand – good or bad. When you feel stressed about something, your body reacts by releasing chemicals into the blood that give you more energy and strength, which can be a good thing if the stress is caused by physical danger – but this can also be a bad thing if your stress is in response to something emotional and there is no outlet for this extra energy and strength.
What Are the Sources of Stress?
Some of the most common sources of stress are:
- Survival Stress: Typically known as the “fight or flight” response that is a common when encountering danger.
- Internal Stress: Worrying about things you can do nothing about, or worrying for no reason at all. It’s one of the most important types of stress to understand and manage.
- Environmental Stress: A response to things around you that cause stress, such as noise, crowding, and pressure from work or family. Identifying these environmental stresses and learning to avoid (or deal with) them will help lower your stress level.
- Fatigue & Overwork: This type of stress builds up over long periods of time, can take a hard toll on your body, and can be caused by working too much (or too hard) at your job(s), school, or home – or simply not knowing how to manage your time well or how to take time for rest and relaxation. This can be one of the hardest kinds of stress to avoid because many feel it’s out of their control.
