When I was over 350 pounds heavy, one of the things that tormented me was the certain knowledge that I would never be beautiful. I only wish that Dove had launched their Campaign for Real Beauty when I was a girl. Then, maybe, I could have heard that all the photos in so-called women’s magazines were not realistic representations of how healthy women look. 

The Campaign was launched in 2004, and over the years Dove has produced several award winning viral videos. My personal favorite is Evolution, which shows how an ordinary woman is transformed into a slick, glossy fashion magazine ad. If ever there was a better demonstration of how artificial our mass marketing system is, I don’t know about it.

If you haven’t watched Evolution, I suggest you do so now. Your feelings about fashion magazines may never be the same.
